How do I correct a name, spelling, or date of birth after I submitted an application?

What to do if name or date of birth is wrong, before and after the applicant submits.

Written by Charlie Cafazza

What you can do depends on whether the applicant has already submitted the application.

Once an application is submitted, the information on it cannot be modified. There is no self-serve edit screen and no internal tool that changes name, spelling, or date of birth on a completed application. If you cannot find an edit control on the order, that is expected.

The application is still unused (not submitted)

Treat it like a wrong-email or unused-link problem.

Do not ask the applicant to “just change it later.” If they have not submitted, they should use a current link and enter the legal name and date of birth the first time.

The application is already submitted

The submitted application cannot be edited. After we receive a completed consumer application, we do not refund because the applicant completed it by mistake (9437975).

For a name that was a nickname, former name, or not the legal name, a new order must be placed with the legal name. The applicant must complete the new application. See How should name-related discrepancies be handled.

For a date of birth typed wrong on a completed application, or any other submitted typo, email [email protected] or call 1-800-942-1366. The information cannot be changed on the existing application. Support will tell you the best path (including whether a new order is needed, and whether it is billed).

If the issue is incorrect information on the finished report (not a typo you made on the form), that is a consumer dispute. Only the applicant can open it. See How can a dispute be opened?, incorrect info on my report, and Dispute the Accuracy of Your Background Report. Send accuracy disputes to [email protected].
